The Hawaiian Warrior Helmet known as the Ikaika Helmet or Mākini have been referenced throughout Hawaiian history! These helmets were originally made from hollowed out gourd with round openings for the eyes and nose. Able to fit over the head, the gourd was adorned with foliage such as palaʻā fern or sedge and attached at the top of the helmet descending in a narrow row down the back of the helmet. Tapa was attached along the front edge of the gourd. The men who wore these were dedicated to the protection of the high chief. These warriors were known as brave defenders and were referred to as Mākini. To honor these warriors, our Ikaika Helmet is casted in 14 Karat Gold.
